　　Cellphones use certain frequency bands to communicate with cell towers and base stations. Jammers transmit within these same bands, thereby creating interference. The network strength and overall calling quality are degraded to the extent that using a phone becomes nearly impossible.

　　Similarly, a GPS jammer is a device that emits powerful radio signals at the frequencies that the GPS receiver expects to receive from GPS satellites. This effectively drowns out the much fainter signals of the GPS.

　　They can generally be divided into 3 main types based on the type of signal they jam – cellphone, internet, andGPS.

　　Cellphone jammers are capable of jamming all kinds of mobile signals. These jammers can usually block all frequency bands including 3G, 4G, GSM, and CDMA. Short-range jammers are often very small (small enough to fit in the palm of one's hand), whereas the more powerful, high-end models are usually bigger.

　　GPS jammers are special signal jammers that can be used to block the transmission of any kind of location tracking service. This jammer, too, comes in all shapes and sizes. There are standalone GPS jammers that can even be as small as one’s finger! However, these jammers only cover a small area and cannot guarantee the coverage of an entire vehicle.

　　Although there are differences between the types of jammers, many models are capable of jamming more than one channel. Most of the high-end models can block phone, GPS and other signals simultaneously or selectively.
